『ReutersやChicago Tribuneなどの報道によれば、出版社Conde Nastが主催したイベントで、Googleの最高経営責任者（CEO）であるEric Schmidt氏が、かねてより噂のオンラインシステムGbuyの存在を認めたという。同氏はGbuyについて「（eBayのオンライン支払システムである）PayPalとはまったく異なる」と述べたと報じられている。
RBC Capital MarketsのアナリストJordan Rohan氏は6月9日に発表したリサーチメモで、Gbuyが6月28日にスタートすると述べている。Googleは支払システムを利用して、ユーザーがどの有料検索をクリックし、実際の購買に結びついたかなどの情報を取得することが可能になる。この情報があれば、Googleは、広告主に投資利益率（ROI）の最も高いカテゴリーを提案できるようになると、Rohan氏は指摘していた。
Googleのオンライン支払いシステムへの進出は、Schmidt氏が2005年6月に、Googleで開発中だと認める発言をして以来、大きな注目を集めている。』
